Coaching Philosophy
My job is to understand you, tap into your positive intentions and ambitions, and help you get to the place that’s right for you.
At the center of what I do is to seek to truly understand your model of the world and the challenges you face. With the right understanding, identifying useful ways forward becomes much easier for both me and you. Any problem can be solved when you understand what problem you are solving.
People typically come to me when they are embarking on a transformation in their organization or their individual work. They also often seek me out for help with communication, whether it be for influence, group decision-making, presenting, storytelling, public speaking, or improving a relationship to enable better communication.
I have coached senior leaders, including C-level executives at some of the world’s largest organizations, in industries ranging from technology and design to client services to consumer goods. I have also worked with small business owners, managers at various levels within organizations, and freelancers.
My methods are based on behavioral science, cognitive therapy principles, and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). These are fields in which many practitioners and researchers have been devoted to the art and science of change for almost half a century. I’ll try to understand who you are, your goals, your vision, how you think, what triggers you, what frustrates you, and what gets you going. I’ll seek to create what the renowned psychotherapist Carl Rogers called “unconditional positive regard” so that we can have a safe space in which to explore your present state and desired outcomes.
As we work, I’ll help you embrace new ways of working, thinking, feeling, and relating that will move you forward. We’ll make use of various tools and techniques from these fields to help you make meaningful changes in how you work and engage with others. As we work, I’ll bring in my knowledge of neuroscience and psychology findings when useful - e.g. to help you recognize where there is scientific backing for a practice; or to see how brains function, so you can know when you are working against your biology and how to work with it instead.
Together we experiment until we find the difference that makes the difference for you. In the process of exploration, there are many tools from NLP, cognitive therapy research, and the behavioral sciences that we can use. These tools help you, for example, to see a different perspective than you previously had, make use of resources you did not realize you have, change your mental or emotional state, work through a difficult decision, identify and build capabilities, and find breakthroughs in communication and influence.
